Prof. Esra
Erdal
"Dr. Esra Erdal is a Professor and the leader of the Stem Cell and Organoid Technologies Lab at the Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG), Turkey. Her research focuses on developing innovative 3D organoid models to study liver diseases and gastrointestinal cancers, with a strong emphasis on advancing personalized therapeutic strategies. Dr. Erdal's work includes investigating the mechanisms underlying drug resistance and stemness phenotypes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), aiming to identify novel therapeutic targets. She also employs cutting-edge technologies, including CRISPR/Cas9 and iPSC-derived organoid systems, to develop pre-cancer and cancer in vitro models that replicate complex disease microenvironments. Additionally, her studies utilize patient-derived cancer organoids to explore molecular pathways in pancreatic and colorectal cancers. Dr. Erdal holds a PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. She has conducted postdoctoral and collaborative research at leading international institutions, including Osaka University in Japan, Duke University in the USA, and INSERM in France. In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Erdal has supervised multiple graduate theses and contributed to high-impact publications in journals such as Nature Communications and Stem Cell Reports. As a recipient of national and international awards, including the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award, she continues to drive advancements in stem cell and organoid technologies, bridging the gap between fundamental research and clinical applications."
