An original research article authored by Mina Masoudi, Ph.D., a NanoBio4Can MSCA COFUND Postdoctoral Fellow at SUNUM - Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center, under the supervision of Dr. Mina Namvari, has been published in Nanotechnology, an IOP Publishing journal.

The article, entitled “Photothermal Performance of Nb2CTx and Ti3C2Tx MXenes for Antibacterial and In Vitro Cytotoxicity,” presents a comparative investigation of the photothermal properties, antibacterial activity, and in vitro cytotoxicity of two promising two-dimensional nanomaterials: Nb2CTx and Ti3C2Tx MXenes.

The study focuses on the development and characterization of these MXene-based nanomaterials, with particular emphasis on their photothermal conversion performance under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation and their potential for biomedical applications. The synthesized MXenes were systematically characterized using complementary physicochemical and morphological techniques, including XRD, TGA, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, SEM, and HR-TEM.

The findings demonstrate distinct photothermal properties between the two MXenes, with Ti3C2T exhibiting superior photothermal conversion efficiency compared with Nb2CTx, under the experimental conditions investigated. Their antibacterial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus was also evaluated under dark and NIR irradiation conditions. In addition, the in vitro cytotoxicity of both materials was investigated to provide further insight into their biological performance.
