Project FOCUS will explore the use of proniosomes for ocular cancer. It will use surface modifications of the niosomes with hyaluronic acid (HA) and short, positively charged peptides with anti-cancer effects (ACPs). The project will employ Interferon alfa-2B (IA2B), a well-known anti-cancer drug, due to its low toxicity. Despite being potent, IA2B is inefficient for ocular treatment due to the eye’s anatomical features. The developed drug delivery system will then be tested on the organoid models developed in collaboration with the eye hospital. The FOCUS project thus aimed to develop a sustained drug delivery system for a rare ocular cancer to increase drug bioavailability and, hence, efficacy.
